About Me

We're a couple that love movies. Since we have children, Netflix is a friend of ours, but on a monthly basis, we try to get in three to four movies. That being said, we hate a lot of them. We've decided to share our opinions, both good and bad with the world. If you agree, hooray! If not, well, get your own blog! ;-)

Review - Jumping the Broom

Hello all,

This is our very first collective blog, and I, alongside a very reluctant Ryan, have decided to share our extensive critiques with the world.  For those of you that know me, I'm a romance freak.  Ryan, not so much...
At any rate, one thing that we do have in common is our love of movies.  We'll watch anything, and often do.  If we had to have a motto, I guess it would be "We can't ever get the 90 minutes spent at a movie back, so it better be good..."  That being said, we're really hard on bad, very bad, movies.  Of those, there are quite a few.  But the good ones, when we come across them, are freaking awesome and worth every penny of the small fortune spent at the concession stand.
On this past weekend, we decided that we should see Jumping The Broom.  This movie brought out some pretty heavy hitters in the world of African American cinema.  I mean, there was Loretta Devine, Angela Bassett (did you know that she and her husband... oh God, what's his name? Ryan says it's Courtney Vance... anyway, they didn't split they were just having problems conceiving... I'm so nosey. Back to the review!), Mike Epps, Paula Patton (Ryan's in love with Paula... she doesn't want him! LOL), and our favorite Tasha Smith.  The list goes on and on.  But even that wasn't enough to convince us to go see the movie after being burned, sizzled by Madea's Big Happy Family - which is just the same ole' Tyler Perry in a new dress.
Since Thor was sold out, we decided to gamble on it. Again, Ryan is in love with Paula. (SMH)  After grabbing a ton of popcorn and Ice-E drinks, we were set to go.  The movie is about a woman named Sabrina (Paula Patton) who starts out with a tumultuous relationship.  After promising God not to give up her 'cookies' to anyone but her future husband.  Of course she, literally, bumps into the one.  His name is Jason (Laz Alonso - remember from Stomp The Yard?), and they are taken with one another almost immediately.  He proposes. Ahhhh! So romantic.  He still hasn't had those cookies.
During the wedding weekend, they bring both Sabrina's mother (Angela Bassett) and dad (Brian Stokes Mitchell) together with Jason's mom (Loretta Devine).  That's when all the fireworks start.  Without any spoilers, the couple have a hard road to travel in trying to make their wedding vows, and in the African American tradition, jump the broom thanks to the shenanigans of their respective family members.
Let me start by saying that this was a relevant and romantic movie.  There were no hard core sex, which was somewhat refreshing (but really, being produced by T. D. Jakes, did you really expect any?), and there were moments when you could relate to the situations that the couples found themselves in and everything that they had to endure.
I liked it... a lot actually.  Ryan thought it was wrought with hot women that made it hard to concentrate (Megan Good is also a cast member), but says he liked it as well.

In our opinion, it is definitely "Couple-Worthy" and gets a big kiss from both of us.

That brings us to the end of our first blog.  On a weekly, or biweekly basis, we'll post reviews and we hope that you'll visit us again soon.

Until next time, see you at the movies!
